I've been told those who can read and don't are considered "functionally
illiterate". Most references to this have been inferred concerning the
newspapers. Personally, I have seen so many reading the "rags" that I
believe the functionally illiterate live and breathe outside the great halls
of knowledge, our libraries.
This piece depicts the plight of the library in a society where the daily
shock value of current events or scandal and gossip win out. This library's
doors have been locked and barred and now the "rags" have their story to
print for the day.
